The news media are far less respected today than they were in forty years ago.
In 1972, Gallup first asked the question: “In general, how much trust and confidence do you have in the mass media . . . when it comes to reporting the news fully, accurately and fairly — a great deal, a fair amount, not very much, or none at all?”
68% said a fair amount or a great deal, and 5% none at all.
In September 2016, the numbers were 32% and 27%.
