I took over as Chair of British Rowing in April 2018, and having written this blog for some time first when I was at Betfair (2000-2010) and then just about things that interested (or nearly killed!) me, I thought I would return to it to record some of my thoughts on the sport. Because the subject interests me, it also includes the occasional post with my views on the political landscape – although not about party politics.
If you’re interested to know my background, I began my career with five years at JPMorgan and five working in the media – broadcasting and producing with BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sport 24, and writing about cricket for the Daily Telegraph. I was then lucky to be asked to become part of the founding team at Betfair – a business which briefly changed the face of the industry it went in to disrupt.
These days, I am a volunteer in various areas. In addition to chairing rowing, I also chair Archery GB, a Cambridge development board, and a project for Onside Youth Zones in Hammersmith that when completed will give young people in my local area a quality, safe and affordable place to go in their leisure time. I am also a Trustee of SportsAid, and a Governor at Holyport College, a State boarding school.
